On February 15th, our team had the
privilege of attending a gala that celebrated the remarkable contributions of African American women in our community. Held at the Truman Arnold Center at Texarkana College, this event was organized through the collaborative efforts of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, centered around the theme “You Make A Difference.”
Walking into that room was a powerful reminder of the beauty and resilience of being Black, especially amidst the negativity and uncertainty that often permeate our society. The sight of many attendees dressed in beautiful African attire was a celebration of our heritage and a reflection of our cultural pride.
The honorees of the evening—Dr. Evelyn Abhulimen, Marie Ferdinand Harris, Lea Metcalf McDonald, Jamie Scott, Monique Ross, and Ramona Keener—are dynamic women making a profound difference in our community. Their unwavering dedication to their missions and commitment to bettering society for their families and those around them is truly inspiring. Each of these remarkable women embodies strength, compassion, and a relentless drive to uplift others. They are not just leaders; they are beacons of hope and role models for future generations.
What truly impressed us was the turnout for this event. It was not a free gathering; attendees made a conscious decision to invest in celebrating Black women and the unity of Black men and women working together. This commitment to support one another was evident throughout the evening.

One of the standout moments of the night was a captivating performance by the Scholars, who played African drums and sang traditional spiritual hymns. Hearing them was a powerful reminder that when we provide our youth with the proper knowledge and tools, they will embrace it and thrive. This performance was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the event.
Additionally, we were thrilled to see Xavier Briggs awarded a $1,000 scholarship to support his college education. This kind of investment in our youth is essential for building a lasting legacy.

In a world that often seeks to undermine our achievements, events like this remind us of our power and our collective responsibility to uplift one another. A special kudos to President Gary Watson and the rest of the Phi Beta Sigma brothers, as well as President Anita Pickett and the Ladies of Zeta Phi Beta, for a job well done in organizing such a meaningful event.
Let us continue to celebrate our excellence and inspire each other to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time.
