Our team recently had the privilege of attending the 'Protecting Our Progress' event organized by Dawson Academy at Arkansas High School, orchestrated by the Eric Darden. This gathering was not just a celebration of Black history; it was a powerful reminder of the contributions and achievements of the Black community in Texarkana throughout the years.

The program also touched on significant topics related to national black history in the military, the evolution of the Arkansas school district, and the rich sports history of Texarkana. They honored notable trendsetters and pioneers like Babe R. Stokes, Dr. Ruth Blackwell, and Essie Dodd, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society.
A particularly moving segment highlighted the importance of education, where valedictorian, Nicholas Watson, was recognized for his achievements alongside salutatorians. In honor of the late Londell Williams, his daughter and grandson spoke powerfully about his legacy of achievement and determination. They shared how he was resolute in standing up for his city at all costs, never backing down despite the many threats he faced.
Adding to the impactful speeches, Pastor David Boone, Mr. Donald Nelson, and Dr. Lloyd Jackson addressed the audience, sharing how their efforts and movements have changed history in Texarkana. Their insights provided a deeper understanding of the ongoing work necessary to foster progress and unity in our community.
What truly set this event apart was the participation of our youth. The Scholars, Kendall Washington and Charis McCray, took the stage to discuss the implications of the word 'Nigga,' gracefully addressing its history and encouraging a thoughtful dialogue about its usage. Their insights were profound and necessary, reminding us of the importance of language and respect in our society.
Addison Girley, the 5A State Wrestling Champion, stole the show with her confident and eloquent speech. Her accomplishments resonated deeply with the audience, showcasing the strength and potential of young women in sports and beyond.
The event also featured the Dawson Academy’s reading of famous Black history poems, which added a rich cultural layer to the proceedings. These performances not only celebrated our heritage but also engaged the audience in the beauty of storytelling and expression.
In reflecting on the 'Protecting Our Progress' event, it’s clear that celebrating Black history is not just about looking back; it’s about recognizing the ongoing journey and the contributions of both past and present figures. The event successfully highlighted the achievements of the Black community in Texarkana and inspired us all to continue striving for progress.
As we move forward, let us carry the lessons learned from this event into our everyday lives, honoring the legacy of those who came before us and empowering the youth who will shape our future. Together, we can protect our progress and build on the foundation laid by our pioneers.
