In the heart of Texarkana, there’s a remarkable individual who is making a real difference in the community. Candace Richardson, a lifelong resident, is devoted to raising awareness about HIV prevention and creating a sense of support among her neighbors. Her journey is a testament to resilience, education, and the power of community.

Candace was born and raised in Texarkana, and her roots run deep. After graduating from Liberty-Eylau High School in 1994, she jumped right into the workforce. Life took her on a journey that included marriage, raising two sons, and navigating a divorce. Now that her sons are 22 and 25 years old, Candace has returned to her education with a passion. She’s currently pursuing her MA in Communication at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, with plans to eventually earn a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership.

In her role as the Prevention and Outreach Regional Coordinator for Special Health Resources, Candace is at the forefront of efforts to combat HIV in the Texarkana area. She leads initiatives that focus on providing culturally sensitive HIV prevention services. One of her notable projects is the HEAT (HIV Education and Testing) initiative, which aims to increase awareness and encourage people to know their HIV status. Candace's commitment shines through as she engages with the community, sharing important information and fostering a sense of belonging for those she serves.

Candace sees outreach as a way to empower individuals. “The goal of our outreach program is to assist, encourage, and support those who are often denied access to important services and rights,” she explains. By creating connections within the community, she helps people feel less isolated and more supported. She believes that when individuals feel connected, it leads to better health outcomes and a stronger community overall.

Being recognized as a spotlighted individual is an honor for Candace. “It’s so rewarding to be acknowledged by the community I work hard for,” she says. This recognition motivates her to continue making a positive impact, no matter how big or small. For those looking to get involved, she suggests starting with simple actions, like volunteering or supporting local initiatives.

Outside of her professional life, Candace embraces the joy of living fully. She enjoys spending time with friends and family, laughing, and building meaningful relationships. One of her favorite aspects of Texarkana is the support residents offer one another. “I love how we come together to help each other out,” she shares.

As she looks to the future, Candace is excited about the potential for her work to grow and evolve. She is open to new partnerships and opportunities that can enhance her outreach efforts and continue making a difference in the lives of those in need.

Candace Richardson is a shining example of what it means to advocate for health and wellbeing in Texarkana. Her dedication reminds us that real change starts with compassion and a commitment to lifting each other up.
